Introduction | Material and methods | Citation | Doubtful records | Excluded taxa | Remarks
Abstract — This list includes 389 species of corticioid, poroid (polypores), hydnoid, clavarioid, cantharelloid, thelephoroid, cyphelloid, and heterobasidiomycetes of Iran, with their synonym(s), distribution data, and substrata data. Almost all of the species are supported by at least one preserved specimen. The list has been compiled mainly based on material collected by us, but also verified reports and literature. Sixteen species are reported for the first time from the country, and 111 species are added to the last comprehensive account of aphyllophoroids of North Iran by Hallenberg 1981 (Mycotaxon 12: 473–502). The occurrence in Iran of six species is regarded as doubtful, while 12 species are excluded from Iranian mycota. The permanent repository for continuous updates is made available via Myco-Lich website, and future new records for the country will be published online. Users can learn about the last changes to the checklist via subscription to a feed (RSS). The link to the checklist is http://www.myco-lich.com/mycology-of-iran/basidiomycota/caucasus-region/....
Key words — Aphyllophoroids, Arasbaran, Hyrcanian forests, Iranian mycota, wood-inhabiting basidiomycetes, Zagros
The non-gilled/non-gasteroid hymenomycetes (ca. aphyllophoroid fungi) are a form group of Agaricomycotina (sensu Hibbett et al. 2007) many of which formerly attributed to the order ‘Aphyllophorales’, an ordinal name which however is no longer in use (Kirk et al. 2008). Their hymenophore configuration is diverse, with the main types being corticioid, poroid, hydnoid, clavarioid, cantharelloid, and thelephoroid. Because many of them depend on wood for nutrition or physical support, ‘wood-inhabiting basidiomycetes’ (or simply wood-fungi) is another term frequently applied to these fungi. Following tradition, and because of many similarities in their ecology, these fungi are usually considered as a practical group by many mycologists, despite that they have been split up systematically.
The first descriptive accounts of aphyllophoroids of Iran were published by Saber (1972, 1974). Following his mycological inventories in Gilan, Golestan and Mazandaran provinces in northern Iran, Hallenberg (1981) summarized the available knowledge on wood-fungi for Iran, which still serves as the most comprehensive reference on Iranian aphyllophoroids.
Since 1981, besides several new records for the country, a number of individual papers by Iranian mycologists elaborated on various wood-fungi species (e.g., Saber 1987, Hoshino et al. 2007, Moradali et al. 2007, Ghobad-Nejhad & Dai 2007, Ghobad-Nejhad & Dai 2010, Ghobad-Nejhad & Kotiranta 2008, Ghobad-Nejhad 2011a). While two subsequent checklists for the Caucasus region (Ghobad-Nejhad et al. 2009, Ghobad-Nejhad 2011b) included a full account of corticioid and poroid fungi of northern Iran, an independent list for the country was delayed for a later scrutiny. Almost all of the available treatments have focused on the northern forest stripe of Iran, mostly in Gilan, Golestan and Mazandaran provinces which harbour the majority of forest cover of the country. Still, the forests (e.g. Arasbaran) and woodlands/open forests in the northwest-west Iran received little or no attention. Recent collections made from these areas, from coniferous wood, and from other provinces have never been summarized. Therefore, a list covering the whole country was essential.
The present checklist is available online at Myco-Lich website which is aimed to provide a permanent repository for unlimited updates, with no unnecessary delay, and making the data available to all mycologists. Our new records for the country will be published online as e-records, after being approved by the specialists, and the users will be able to learn about the last changes to the checklist via a feed reader subscription (see the RSS subscription link at the website). The checklist is downloadable in PDF format for offline use. Previous editions are archived yearly and will be made available for download as PDF.
We would highly appreciate receiving comments and notifications from mycologists, curators of herbaria containing indet. Iranian material, and authors of publications treating Iranian specimens. Please send your comments to the corresponding author's address.
The following list includes species of corticioid, poroid (polypores), hydnoid, clavarioid, cantharelloid, thelephoroid, cyphelloid, and heterobasidiomycetes of Iran. The list was compiled based on material collected by MG during 2000–2008 and NH in 2008 (at Ghobad-Nejhad ref. coll. and GB respectively, many of which duplicated at IRAN), some earlier reports verified from H, IRAN, GB and BR, few indet. specimens collected by Probst (at GB) as well as literature. All of the species are supported by at least one preserved specimen (many of them collected or verified by us), except for 15 species for which no voucher could be located, marked with an exclamation mark (!). Microscopy routine is as described by Ghobad-Nejhad (2011a). During field work, isolates of several species were obtained and deposited at Fungal Culture Collection of University of Gothenburg (FCUG) which is now closed and the Iranian isolates are now deposited in IRAN culture collection (see the list of isolates by Hallenberg 2011).
In the following list, accepted fungal species names and nomenclature generally agree with the public databases Cortbase (http://andromeda.botany.gu.se/cortbase.html) and MycoBank (www.mycobank.org), and spelling of plant names follows IPNI (www.ipni.org). Accepted fungal names are in bold italic, followed by synonyms in italic (those synonyms which were used in the literature treating the species in Iran). New records for the country are marked with an asterisk (*). Species not listed by Hallenberg (1981) are marked with a plus sign (+). The provincial distribution data is a synopsis of published records and examined specimens. For this list, 684 unpublished specimens mainly collected by the authors were included and these were the source for substrata data given for the species. When listing the substrata, MG and NH refer to Masoomeh Ghobad-Nejhad and Nils Hallenberg collection numbers, respectively, to avoid repeating the last names of the collectors. If several collections made from the same type of substrata, the total number of collections and the family name of the collector come after a hash (#). The literature references mentioned for each species are principally the publications made after 1981, except if not summarized before. The citation to Hallenberg (1981) and literature references summarized therein [Rabenhorst (1871), Rostrup (1908), Petrak (1940, 1949), Khabiri (1958), Saber (1972, 1974), Steyaert (1972), Fallahyan (1973), Watling & Sweeney (1974), Soleimani (1976), Hallenberg (1978, 1979, 1980), Niemelä & Uotila (1977), Probst (1977)] are not repeated here except in a few cases. Doubtful and excluded records are listed in the end.
Descriptions and illustrations for many of the accepted species can be sought for in Bernicchia & Gorjón (2010) and Mycobank.

As indicated in Table 2, the majority of species are reported from Golestan (229 spp.), Mazandaran (181 spp.), Gilan (151 spp.), and East Azerbaijan (123 spp.). These account for the Hyrcanian forests of northern Iran, at the southernmost stretches of the Caucasus region. The number of aphyllophoroids known for each Province in Iran is presented in Table 2, and the number of species for major Iranian phytogeographical territories (after Zohari 1973, White & Léonard 1991) is displayed in Table 3. It is clear that the number of species for Irano-Turanian region will increase when more inventories in its western part, esp. in Zagros forests, are carried out. The independent list for each Province and each phytochoria will be extractable from the Myco-Lich website, via the link page to this checklist (see citation).
